Walk the Flight Path Event in Brentford

A crowd of eighty gathered at Brentford Fountains Leisure Centre on Saturday to protest against the proposed 3rd runway at Heathrow. Co-ordinator Dave Waller opened the event with unequivocal words:

'Our part of West London is already severely blighted by aircraft noise.  We are appalled that the government is supporting Heathrow's bid for a third runway knowing that it will cause thousands more people to suffer on a daily basis, all for what appear to be doubtful economic benefits. BASHR3 intends to fight this ill-conceived proposal all the way.'

We then set off to 'walk the flight path' from the leisure centre, up Green Dragon Lane and through Brentford via the station to Boston Manor Park, demonstrating that this would be one of the many residential areas affected by the new runway.

Ruth Cadbury, MP for Brentford and Isleworth took part in the walk, commenting that it was great to see so many supporters, including from the west of the borough. Ruth said, 'People from Feltham, Heston, Cranford and Hounslow are all too aware of the disruption such extreme and constant noise can bring to daily lives. Today we want to show the people of Brentford that the new flight path would go right over their heads, greatly increasing the level and constancy of noise they already suffer.'

The walk ended with tea and chat at the cafe in Boston Manor Park.  The friendly atmosphere and the lovely setting served as good reminders of why people feel so passionately about preserving the quality of their daily lives in this part of West London. One walker summed up the mood of the day; 'I love living in Brentford, but I already wake up at 4.30am when the planes are overhead.  I would hate to have to move house for my older years, but if the 3rd runway is given the green light, I can't see myself being able to stay.'

The Government consultation on Heathrow's proposal for a third runway ends in May, so there is still time to respond.  Email bashrunway3@gmail.com if you would like further information on how to do this.
